The family of Sandy Hook Elementary student Catherine Violet Hubbard received a deed Wednesday from Governor Dannel P. Malloy for approximately 34.44 acres of land in Newtown. The land is going to the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation to create an animal sanctuary and wildlife preserve.

Catherine Violet Hubbard was one of the 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School students who lost her life in the school shootings in December 2012. Catherine Violet Hubbard was 6-years-old when she died. After her death her family asked for donations to The Animal Center in Newtown in lieu of flowers. They later partnered with the The Animal Center to plan for the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary to honor Catherine’s love for animals.

Jenny and Matt Hubbard stated on their Facebook page, “The conveyance of this land to the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation allows our family to continue its efforts in honoring our daughter’s life by providing safe haven to the animals she loved. The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary will be a place where all creatures will know that we are kind and they are safe – just as Catherine would have it. We are both humbled and grateful for the support and kindness we have received from the governor’s office, Department of Agriculture, our local and state legislators, and the Governor.”

Rep. Mitch Bolinsky said, “I’m grateful to legislature, the Governor and the state Commissioner of Agriculture for the conveyance of state land to the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation in Newtown (CVH) for the purposes of using the land for an animal sanctuary. This is a worthwhile cause and a wonderful way to honor Catherine’s love of animals.”

A ceremonial bill signing was held Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the state capital with lawmakers and the Hubbard family to enact Special Act 14-13 which facilitates the transfer of the state-owned land to create the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary. The legislation requires the Foundation to cover administrative costs of the property transfer.

For Those Who Know:

I release my little inner child into the heart of Catherine so she can see that "I Am Kind" and ask the Light within to go before me and speak Its words through me as me in peace with love. Your note will be printed and underlined; my credentials will be with me; my Animal Chaplain prayer will be said before leaving my car; and God's Grace will greet me at the door. And so it is.

One year ago today, the unthinkable happened, an event that shattered the peace of Newtown, the State, the Nation and the World.

Marking this anniversary, Newtown continues its quest to "Choose Love" by requesting reporters to kindly stay away and allow their families some private time.

They shared their memories with each other and loved ones behind the cloak of an early December snowfall, and for the most part, the press cooperated.

They also shared their stories of healing through the charitable work they have been doing to honor their children's individual personalities and interests.

As an Ordained Animal Chaplain and Animal Loss Grief Counselor, I am, of course, drawn to the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary.

Please watch the videos above and below and if you feel compelled to do so, become a Butterfly and help this dream come true.

Thank you.

Tonight I let Smudgy out of my adorable barn apartment and, as usual, listened to hear the stillness in the trees. It was present.

I listened for the heavy quiet of a cold winter's night but found instead a disconcerting hum in the distance of traffic and chaos, of life and death, of fear and peace...and hope and love.
